Service Description

Anyone entering the world of self employment as an artist, maker or designer needs this course. René has over 25 years first hand successful creative industry experience coupled with a Masters degree in Arts Management from Queens University, Belfast. She has designed this comprehensive, practical foundation course on which to begin building a creative career. The course was initially funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and delivered via Arts for All in Belfast. Arts for All is an important and renowned arts venue working very closely with University and art school graduates learning to navigate their early years in the visual arts sector. The course content covers a variety of areas anyone going into business or launching their studio will face, from very basic explanations around the difference between turnover and income, through to: How much you should charge for your work: Business Structure; Governance; Financial Considerations; Financial Good Practice; PR; Storytelling; Branding; Humanising your Offering; Pricing your Work; Sustainability; Understanding Handmade; What is a portfolio career? Many more areas of discussion arise in the sessions and René is ready to aid participants in finding solutions to issues they face in structuring their new work life. René has delivered courses in many formats over the years within a range of settings. She has worked with many arts organisations including Arts for All, Clones Art Studios, Create Innovate Armagh, CraftNI, Future Foundations and Queens University and is rolling the course out across the country this year and next, into a variety or arts and education settings. Her engaging manner and ability to simplify information make her classes fun, easy to follow and memorable. René chaired Belfast Print Workshop for several years, has been a director on the board of Craft Northern Ireland, is currently a partner and creative director of mullin.ie her family landscape architecture practice, and runs her own successful printmaking studio placed.ie . She is a selected directory member of Design Ireland (Dcci), a Visual Artist Ireland professional member and an artist member of Belfast Print Workshop. Working across the visual arts throughout her creative career, beginning in a graphic design studio in Edinburgh and moving into architecture, craft, fine art, illustration and digital design, her career has spanned many areas, the knowledge and experience gained is invaluable.
